Respondr
Maritime & ports

Port radio communications, from quay to ship.

Respondr coordinates terminals, ships and operators on one PTT platform — built for harsh industrial environments and demanding port operations.

Why ports choose Respondr

Modern port operations require coordination between cranes, tugboats, mooring crews and terminals. Respondr extends traditional marine VHF radio with clear digital PTT that holds up in industrial environments and adverse weather.

The platform unifies ship-to-shore communications: ground teams, crews and harbour pilots coordinate through a single console, reducing delays and increasing manoeuvre safety.

Blue ship-to-shore gantry cranes working a container ship berthed at the quay in the port of Genoa, with stacks of containers filling the terminal behind them.

Maritime sector use cases

Loading & unloading operations
Loading, unloading and checking teams coordinate in real time around container moves. The operations centre monitors the position of equipment and personnel, preventing bottlenecks in work areas.
Mooring manoeuvres and pilots
Harbour pilots communicate with tugboats and mooring crews on dedicated high-priority channels, with live positions supporting safe manoeuvres even in poor visibility.
Port security and access control
Security teams and authorities manage checks and inspections on encrypted channels, with one-button emergency alerts for incidents in the port area.
Ro-Ro and passenger terminals
Vehicle and passenger boarding coordinated with dedicated channels per deck and stowage area.

Marine VHF and the terminal, one conversation

Patch the marine VHF channel onto the terminal’s own network and the bridge, the pilot and the quay talk on a single channel. A banner across the top of the dispatcher names every channel currently patched.

On the Port tab a banner at the top reports 2 patched channels, VHF Marine 12 and Harbour Ops. Sara Engel is talking on Harbour Ops and her voice is relayed onto VHF Marine 12; beside them the VHF Marine 16 and TETRA Ops 1 channels stay idle.

Port-specific features

Maritime channel plans
Channels and rooms modelled on how the port actually operates — quay, terminal, waterside.
Marine VHF, DMR and TETRA bridging
Existing marine VHF, DMR and TETRA radio joins the same conversations through Respondr gateways.
Rugged devices
Works with rugged PoC handhelds and accessories built for wet, loud environments.
Emergency alerts
One-button alarm with recording and position for man-overboard and area incidents.
Security audit trail
Recordings and event logs support ISPS-style port security reviews.
Live crew positions
The control room sees where each crew member is on the console map, from the quay to the terminal.

Operational benefits

Higher terminal productivity
Instant communications cut downtime in loading and unloading operations.
Fewer incidents
Tight coordination during critical manoeuvres and dangerous-goods handling protects people and equipment.
Lower equipment costs
Smartphones and rugged PoC devices take the place of dedicated radios for many roles.
